Who we are

Facing the Mountain Zen Group is a small Soto Zen practice community based in Reno, Nevada. We meet in a floating format: stable regular practice, shared forms, and spiritual friendship—without owning a permanent temple building.

Our emphasis is simple: sit regularly, practice sincerely, support one another, and bring practice into ordinary life.

Is this a good fit?

We welcome newcomers and experienced practitioners. Our container is supportive and practice-centered.

Likely a good fit if you want…

  • A steady meditation practice
  • Traditional Zen forms in an accessible setting
  • Spiritual friendship grounded in practice
  • A community that values sincerity over performance

May not be the best fit if you want only…

  • Discussion without regular sitting
  • A purely therapeutic/support-group format
  • Drop-in spirituality without commitment to practice

If you're unsure, that's okay. Start with a simple hello and we'll help you discern.

Three ways people arrive here

New to Zen

Curious, interested, maybe intimidated. Start with our beginner path and intro night.

Returning or experienced practitioner

If you've practiced before, see how our local lineage and forms align with your path.

Zen-curious

If you're exploring, we can help you understand whether this container is right for you.

First step: say hello

Our first step is simple: send us an email introduction. Tell us a little about your background and what brings you to practice.

From there, we may suggest:

  • Attending our monthly beginner night first (if you're new)
  • A brief phone/Zoom conversation
  • Joining an upcoming sit
Email Us

We respond as quickly as we can; thank you for your patience.

Support the practice

We operate on modest monthly costs and volunteer effort. If you'd like to support the continuation of practice in Reno, donations are welcome.
